[PODCAST] South India is not a Separate Country

An engaging conversation about the origins and evolution of the separatist discourse that the south of India is a separate nation.

From 2018 onwards, a new divisive narrative has been let loose in Indian public discourse. It is based on a false premise that South Indian states contribute more to the national exchequer and are being shortchanged by the central government led by PM Narendra Modi. Based on this premise, the narrative has shifted gears to demand a separate nation comprising the whole of South India.

In plain language, this is an open call for secession.

However, this narrative is not new. It has a history of a century.

In this podcast episode, Sandeep Balakrishna does a deep dive into the origins and the history of this demand for secession. Among other things, it is the combined outcome of Dravidianism, the 1928 Nehru Report, the infamous Adhikari Thesis and the Linguistic reorganisation of Indian states.
